One of the most prominent key to achieve mass popularity even during rookie time is THE COMPANY itself. Like Exo from SM, WINNER and iKON from YG, also GOT 7 from JYP. Also smae with newly debut (or not so new) girl group Twice from JYP, Lovely from Woolim (already became one of big company, merged with SM) also don't forget Red Velvet from SM. They easily lend some variety show also some CF, well can't deny the power of company.
Another thing that I will consider one of the key of achieving public recognition (not massive popularity yet), their extraordinary style like Crayon Pop with Bar Bar. But they need to keep up with something to keep them floating in the public attention.
Mostly for girl group, they used sexual theme to get their name out there. To catch people attention. I would say Girls Day, EXID, and AOA for this.

in 2014, they receive massive popularity until now..
Girls Day have undergo a lot of time as a 'nugu' (unpopular/unknown) group before Expectation in 2013, which they shade away their cute image and move on with sexy theme. After that they have a continuous comeback with sexy comeback. In 2014 they have this massive hit with Something. Now Girls Day is always on korean television. Congrats to this girls cause they start from scratch. (even though they have some controversial issue on acting rude but they need to learn from mistake).
also EXID, I think I don't have to say much. Hani fancam is the indicator of their popularity now. the end.
another thing is of course good song and excellent visual of group member. I would say for song group like BEAST, Big Bang and SHinee (apart from big company) they really have great song. For not so senior group like BTS and VIXX also have great song and cool choreography.
there are some rookie that catch my attention. Which are Seventeen and GFriend. Well I did't even listen to their song yet. But I find their effort and hard work as from just small company is great thing. I hope both of them slowly and steadily climbing to their success.
look back at my point of saturated industry, only several rookie could get their name known to public. there are many other rookie that I don't even know their name or their member. I remember watching Happy Together, Big Bang as the guest. There are one of the question about Park Myunsoo daughter also have dream to become singer. GD respond with; (somehow like this) it is good to have the drive to do something (singing, dancing) but you need to know yourself, know your innate that can give you distinctive character that differ from others.
